What Information Does Instagram Collect

Device information

Instagram collects information from your device called “device identifiers”. If they don’t precise in their privacy policy what that information is, we know that Facebook knows the operator you are using as well as your phone number and time zone. Facebook also collects information about your location through GPS, Bluetooth, or WiFi signals.


Third-party metadata

If you geotag your photo or tag your photo using other’s APIs then, your latitude and longitude will be stored with the photo and searchable (e.g., through a location or map feature) if your photo is made public by you in accordance with your privacy settings.


Information after deletion of your account

After deleting or deactivating your account, Instagram may retain information (including your profile information) and User Content for an unclear “commercially reasonable time” for backup, archival, and/or audit purposes.


Information shared to advertisers

Instagram shares certain information such as cookie data with third-party advertising partners. This information would allow third-party ad networks to, among other things, deliver targeted advertisements that they believe will be of most interest to you.

How to delete your Instagram account

To permanently delete your account:

  1. Go to the delete your account page. If you’re not logged into Instagram on the web, you’ll be asked to log in first. You can’t delete your account from within the Instagram app.
  2. Select an option from the drop-down menu next to Why are you deleting your account? and re-enter your password. The option to permanently delete your account will only appear after you’ve selected a reason from the menu.
  3. Click or tap “Permanently delete my account”.
